Cooler Water Brings a Different Kind of Adventure
1 August 2026
Have you noticed those brisk mornings lately?
The kind that make you pause at the door, reach for another layer and wonder whether getting out of bed was such a good idea.
Fortunately, colder weather brings its own rewards on Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf.
The water feels nice and chilly, fewer boats may be around and the fishing takes on a different character. Better still, winter can also bring more opportunities to see dolphins moving through the Gulf.
Cooler Water Brings a Different Kind of Adventure
Winter mornings on the Hibiscus Coast often begin with crisp air and calm views across the water.
At first, leaving a warm house may take some motivation. However, once the jet ski is moving and the coastline opens ahead, the cold start quickly becomes part of the adventure.
The cooler months can offer a quieter experience than the busy summer season. As a result, anglers can focus on the ride, the fish finder and the search for a promising spot.
Warm, quick drying clothing still makes a big difference. A hot drink waiting back on shore does too.
Winter Can Mean Heavier Snapper
Snapper remains one of the most popular target species for Hauraki Gulf anglers.
Research covering recreational catches in local fishing areas found that Hauraki Gulf snapper were heavier on average during winter than summer.
That does not mean every winter trip will produce a large fish. However, it gives anglers another reason to keep fishing after the summer crowds have gone home.
Local fishing conditions also change throughout the cooler months. At times, larger snapper may hold around reefs, seabed changes and coastal structure within reach of a carefully planned jet ski fishing trip.
And our Lowrance HD fish finders help riders check water depth, locate seabed structure and look for signs of fish activity beneath the jet ski.
The image below shows fish grouped close to the seabed in 7 metres of water during a Hauraki Gulf fishing trip. Sonar cannot confirm the exact species, but it helps anglers identify promising areas and decide where to fish.

A fish finder cannot guarantee that big snapper. Even so, seeing strong marks appear on the screen certainly adds to the excitement.

Where the Fish Go, Hunters May Follow
Cold season changes do not only interest anglers.
Common dolphins feed on schooling fish, smaller midwater fish and squid. Therefore, their movements often relate closely to where prey gathers around the Gulf.
Research in the Hauraki Gulf found increased probabilities of common dolphin encounters during winter and spring in parts of the region. It also identified a possible winter movement from offshore areas towards more inshore waters, linked to prey distribution.
That fits with what many locals notice online each winter. Dolphin watch pages begin sharing regular sightings, feeding activity and pods moving through the wider Hauraki Gulf.
So, while summer has warm water and long evenings, winter may offer a better opportunity for an unexpected dolphin encounter.
Of course, dolphins remain wild animals. Their movements cannot be predicted and no sighting is ever guaranteed.

Sometimes a fishing mission becomes memorable before anyone catches a fish.
A pod appearing nearby can turn a cold morning into a story that gets told for years.

When dolphins appear, riders must slow down and give them space. In addition, they should never chase the pod, cut through the group or separate adults from calves.
DOC advises vessels to travel slowly and quietly within 300 metres. It also asks people to avoid obstructing dolphins or approaching when several boats are already nearby.

A Fishing Setup Ready for Winter
Our two fishing jet skis include Lowrance HD fish finders, purpose built fishing racks and secure rod holders.
Each one also carries its own 50-litre chilly bin. In addition, four rods and reels are available with slow jigs suited to snapper, kahawai and kingfish.
You drive the jet ski yourself and independently after receiving a comprehensive safety briefing, operating instructions and route information.
Meanwhile, our team prepares the equipment, tracks the jet skis by GPS and remains available by phone while you are on the water.
Choose a three, four or six hour experience depending on how much time you want for the search.

Fish Responsibly During the Cooler Months
Fishing success depends on the location, conditions, technique and a fair amount of luck.
Therefore, no fish size, catch or wildlife sighting can be guaranteed.
Every angler must also follow the current recreational fishing rules. These include minimum sizes, daily limits, closed areas and location specific restrictions.
Before heading out, check the latest Fisheries New Zealand rules for the Auckland and Hauraki Gulf area.
Measure each fish carefully, release undersized fish gently and take only what you need.
A responsible approach helps protect the Hauraki Gulf while still leaving plenty of room for the excitement of the ride, the search for snapper and an unexpected dolphin encounter.
Cold mornings, quiet water and a fishing jet ski ready to go. That is our kind of winter.
